Crime Stoppers Executive Director Katherine Cabaniss and outgoing Houston City Council Member Toni Lawrence will host the Seventh Annual Anti-Celebratory Gunfire press conference on Monday, December 28, 2009 at 10:00 am at HPD’s Spring Branch Store Front.  Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt and Houston City Council Member- Elect Brenda Stardig will also attend.

Celebratory gunfire traditionally occurs on New Year’s Eve. Innocent citizens are at risk of becoming victims of random gunfire. This dangerous conduct has resulted in injuries and deaths in the greater Houston area. During her tenure on City Council, Council Member Lawrence, with the help of Crime Stoppers, has sought to reduce and prevent this dangerous practice which is also a criminal offense. Council Member- Elect Brenda Stardig will continue to carry the torch on this important message.

Since prior press conferences have raised the public’s awareness of this dangerous activity, incidences of celebratory gunfire has decreased. This safety issue affects every citizen in every community where guns are owned and bullets might be fired in celebration.

Please join us as we come together to remind the public that not only is this practice dangerous but it is also a criminal offense.

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $5,000 for any information called in to the 713-222-8477 tips hotline or submitted online at www.crime-stoppers.org that leads to the identification, arrest and/or charging of any felony suspect.  Tips can also be sent by text message - Text TIP610 plus your tip to CRIMES (274637).  All tipsters remain anonymous.
