Tax Credit Apartment Proposals

On February 9, 2022 City Council will vote on proposed tax credit apartments. The proposed apartments in District A are:

  • Campanile on Westview (Elderly) – 1212 W Sam Houston Pkwy N (Westview and the Beltway)
  • Clay Road Senior Apartments (Elderly) – 10305 Clay Road (Gessner and Clay)
  • Hartwood at Clarblak (Family) – 4015 Clarblak

Process:
The apartments that will be awarded tax credits are chosen at the state level using a competitive point system. In order to be awarded enough points to move forward, they have to receive support from both the municipality (City of Houston) and the state house representative. If both or either oppose, the proposed apartment complex will not have enough points to move forward.

Next Steps:
I ask for you to look into these proposals by contacting the developers. A representative for Blazer Building (Clay Road Senior Apartments and Hartwood at Clarblak) will attend the Spring Branch Central Super Neighborhood meeting tonight to answer questions:

How I will Vote:
I will ultimately vote based on the overall consensus of the community, but please keep in mind that this is not my decision alone. This will be a vote by the Council body.

Weather Updates

The National Weather Service is forecasting light freezing rain in Harris County and surrounding areas after 4:00 PM on Thursday. Light ice accumulation on bridges and overpasses is possible on Friday.

Weather conditions should improve by Sunday. Please remember to protect the 4 P’s – people, pets, pipes and plants. Dressing in warm, layered clothing, and monitoring road conditions are additional recommended actions.

W. Little York/Alabonson Drainage Project Update

Equipment is being mobilized for the W. Little York/Alabonson Drainage & Paving Project. This project is to address street flooding and will replace inadequate, aging pipes that have been crushed from tree roots. Construction begins next week!

Road Work at I10 and Wirt

Please note that road work at I10 and Wirt is being done to update and extend the left turn bay on Wirt. The city’s contractor will be at this location for approximately three weeks.

If this is part of your daily commute, you may want to consider a detour. Please contact my office with any questions or concerns.

Large Scale Emergency Drill this Saturday

On Saturday, February 5th, local first responders from the Greater Houston and surrounding areas will be conducting a large-scale emergency drill located at Westlake Park Campus in the Energy Corridor. The exercise will last from 8:00 AM to after midnight. This exercise is not open to the public. Please expect a large presence of law enforcement and other emergency officials in the area on this day, and remember this is only a drill to help law enforcement better respond in real-life situations.

One Safe Houston

Mayor Turner recently announced “One Safe Houston,” a comprehensive plan to combat violent crime in Houston. The plan includes:

  • More officers on the ground – 125 officers per day on overtime
  • More technology
  • Increase the number of park rangers
  • Identify and focus on top hot spot crime areas
  • Identify and address nuisance locations
  • Working collaboratively with the District Attorney’s office to address court backlogs and bring violent offender cases to completion.
  • Additional funding to the Houston Forensic Science Center to address backlogs.
  • Upcoming proposed ordinance to require bail bonding companies to charge the customary 10 percent of the bail bond sent by the court.
  • Crisis Intervention, Response, and Recovery (CURE) Program to train and deploy outreach workers to mitigate conflict before it turns violent.
  • Community Re-Entry Programs

You can read the full report here: https://www.houstontx.gov/mayor/press/2022/one-safe-houston.pdf

I look forward to working with HPD to implement these plans in District A.

Since 1938, the nation’s fourth largest city is transformed from a bustling metropolis to a down-home celebration of Western heritage. Decorative floats intermingle with thousands of men and women on horseback to fill the streets with hoof beats and marching bands. Enthusiastic Houstonians join out-of-town spectators to line the streets and sidewalks to be involved in one of Houston’s most popular celebrations!
