Young Adult Author Q&A: Matt de la Peña

Critically acclaimed author Matt de la Peña visited Stratford High School recently and talked to about 300 middle and high school students from across the school district. In the high school auditorium, de la Peña discussed his journey from basketball jock to writer as he pulls new ideas and fictional characters from everyday life.

After his campus talk, de la Peña took time to sit down with new Stratford High reporter Ellie Herrmann to talk about the writing process, the feelings behind planning his first series, and his upcoming books.

Trish Schappell of Rummel Creek Elementary School was named as SBISD T-2-4 Spotlight Teacher in January for her work and passion in creating the nonprofit group The Kids’ Reading Room, which has established several children’s reading rooms in area apartment complexes.

Connecting young readers with authors in face-to-face gatherings like the Bookworm Festival is one way that SBISD is supporting and fostering the joy of reading.

Just Call My Name by Holly Goldberg Sloan

One of my favorite authors released the sequel to her book, I’ll Be There, this past summer! The sequel is titled Just Call My Name. This is a great story of friendship, family, love and protection. Holly Goldberg Sloan is a talented author, and I wish I could sit down and have coffee with each of the characters in her novels. Check them out – both great reads! Last year, I had the privilege of meeting Holly Goldberg Sloan at the Tweens Read! Check out the photograph!

Our Students: What are they reading?

Odette’s Secrets by Maryann MacDonald

This book is about a little girl named Odette. She lives in Paris, and her family is Jewish. It’s the time of World War II. Because it’s wartime, she has to hide with her mother from the German soldiers elsewhere. Her father is helping fight the Germans, and Odette doesn’t see him for five years. At the end of the book, she finally does see her father. I like history and historical fiction. I like the characters in this book. They all have really big hearts. This is my favorite book right now.
