Hurricane Harvey Housing Recovery
The City recently rolled out the Homeowner Assistance Program (HoAP) to assist homeowners and renters with flood recovery. If you flooded during Hurricane Harvey or another recent flood, you could be eligible for assistance if you: completed work on your home, are in the process of repairs, or about to start repairs. All you have to do is fill out a quick survey, and, if eligible, you will then fill out an application for assistance.

- Go in person to one of the Housing Resource Centers. There are four locations (see the flyer above). You can visit any of the locations, but the location in District A is:

Hire Houston Youth Summer Jobs Available
All youth ages 16 to 24 in the Houston area can apply for paid jobs and internships in many kinds of industries, non-profit organizations, and businesses as well as City of Houston government.
Visit www.hirehoustonyouth.org to apply. Click on the “youth” tab, create an account, and choose a job to apply for.
Selected applicants will be paid at least $8 per hour for at least 7 weeks during the summer, and some employers are seeking immediate placements.
Companies such as American Pool Houston are looking to hire 400 lifeguards at various community pools, for example. Other employers include McDonald’s, United Airlines, Texas Department of Transportation, Houston Airport System, MD Anderson Cancer Center, iT’z Pizza and non-profit organizations like Urban Enrichment Institute, Houston Food Bank and more.
More employers are urged to join the program. Mayor Turner has set a goal of 10,000 jobs for summer 2019, up from 7,500 last year. He started the program in 2016 with 2,500 jobs. In lieu of providing summer jobs, employers can make a tax deductible $2,500 donation to sponsor a subsidized youth to work at a non-profit organization, and/or become vendor at a job or career fair.

Standard Recycling Schedule Resumes
The Solid Waste Department announced that the collection of residential recycling returns to its regular collection day effective Monday, February 4, 2019.

Citizen Police Academy Accepting Applications
Have you ever wondered what kind of training a police officer must undergo to do his or her job? Now is your chance to find out. The Houston Citizens’ Police Academy, HCPA, is currently accepting applications.
The Houston Citizens’ Police Academy (CPA) was organized in 1989 and offers citizens the opportunity to learn about the internal operations of the Houston Police Department. The Citizens’ Police Academy speakers, (mostly Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice experts in their fields), provide lectures, demonstrations, tours, and hands-on activities for Academy participants.
The overall objective of the Academy is to provide citizens with sound and accurate information about HPD and the criminal justice process so citizens are able to make informed decisions regarding issues / matters involving the police department and/or police activity. Participants will be able to share their experiences and learned information with family, friends, co-workers, and their community to further improve and strengthen community-police relations.
COURSE CURRICULUM
Each week, a different discipline or area of HPD is presented such as: Houston Emergency Center (police dispatch), Pursuit Driving, SWAT Detail, Shoot-Don’t Shoot training exercises, Firearms Training, Mounted Patrol Division, and Helicopter Division.
Citizens also participate in the department’s Ride-Along program, which allows citizens the opportunity to ride in a police car with a patrol officer.
Dates: The Citizens’ Police Academy is usually held twice a year and involves a 33-hour block of instruction, consisting of a three and 1/2 hour class, every week for 10 weeks. The times of the class are usually 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Spring Session: (March through May)
Tuesday Class: March 5 – May 7, 2019
Thursday Class: March 7 – Wednesday, May 8, 2019
Graduation for both classes will be Thursday, May 9.
