Preparing for Disasters

I recently held a meeting with disaster recovery partners, including Commissioner Tom Ramsey, to discuss a disaster plan focused on District A. As we continue to have more disasters in our City, I am making sure that we have a plan in place for our community. More details to come at the Hurricane Preparedness Town Hall!

Proposed Budget Schedule – Public Hearing

The City’s proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 Budget will be released on May 11th, and a Public Hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, May 26th at 9:00 AM. To speak at this hearing, you need to contact the City Secretary’s Office at 832-393-1100.

Budget Workshops are scheduled from May 12th through May 20th.  Workshops provide each department the opportunity to discuss their proposed budget.  You can watch these meetings live (see the schedule below).  If you would like to speak at any of these virtual meetings, please contact Mayor Pro Tem Dave Martin’s Office (Chair of the Budget & Fiscal Affairs Committee) at [email protected]

Your 2 Cents Survey

“City departments are currently analyzing how to spend the Houston’s $5 billion operating budget. Of this $5 billion, roughly half is the tax-supported (property and sales tax) general fund. The other half represents enterprise funds – city operations supported by fees and charges (water, sewer, streets, drainage, airports). The city has a separate capital budget which will be adopted this summer.

“This fiscal year, Houston City Council will face a tough budget process due to current economic conditions caused by COVID-19. While the operating budget is the most significant legislative measure passed by council, there is very little public engagement in the process. By completing this survey, you are helping me understand how you want your tax dollars prioritized for spending. The survey focuses on tax-supported general fund spending.”
