Happy Fourth of July!

The District A Team and I wish you a happy and safe Independence Day!

Please remember that fireworks are illegal in the City of Houston. The fines are anywhere from $500 – $2000 for each individual firework. Warnings are no longer used because of the seriousness of the firework laws. If a minor is caught with fireworks, the parent or guardian will receive the fine even if they were unaware of the minor’s possession and/or usage.

If you hear or see fireworks in your neighborhood, contact HPD’s non-emergency number at 713-884-3131. As part of an ongoing public safety initiative, the District A office pays for overtime for HPD officers (from our Council District Service Funds, which is funded through your tax dollars). While officers will be in District A to respond to fireworks calls, the amount of calls they typically receive is extremely high. It may take a while for them to get to your neighborhood, but they will do their best to respond to as many of the calls as possible. Please keep in mind that they might also be pulled from this type of enforcement if a higher priority call comes in (like gunshots, active robberies, etc.)

If you believe that there may be a fire and/or medical emergency related to the use of fireworks, please contact 9-1-1.

Freedom Over Texas

This year’s Freedom Over Texas will return to an in-person event filled with six-hours of festivities, tradition, and live concert stages, along Allen Parkway. Freedom Over Texas will feature local, regional, and national entertainment and will be capped off with a musically choreographed, “Texas-sized” fireworks finale.

Shell Freedom Over Texas will feature live concerts from country music sensations, The Clay Walker Band and Sawyer Brown.

If you are unable to attend the live event, you can watch the Live Broadcast from 7:00-10:00 PM on ABC13 and the Livestream on ABC13.com to catch all the action, music, and fireworks!

Upcoming Projects

Tanner Road
The City recently passed the Fiscal Year 2023-2027 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). I offered an amendment to allocate $1.7M towards the widening and reconstruction of Tanner Road. The amendment passed unanimously! While we still need more funding for this project to move forward, this is at least a positive step in the right direction.
Kemp Forest and Rosefield Roundabout
Construction will begin soon at Kemp Forest and Rosefield to construct a roundabout at the intersection for better mobility as well as safety for vehicles and pedestrians. The project should be completed by the end of July

Community Events from June

Highlighting some of the many community events from last month!
Thank you to all of the constituents who came to City Hall to help advocate for more drainage and mobility projects in District A!
Visiting with Houston Fire Department Station 4!

It is such an honor to represent the Carverdale neighborhood. I participated in the TCEQ public hearing to oppose the landfill expansion in the neighborhood. The community showed up and spoke out!!

With Council Member David Robinson at the microphone. We were also joined by Council Member Mike Knox, staff from Council Member Alcorn’s office, Senator John Whitmire, Representative Jarvis Johnson, and Representative Penny Morales Shaw.

I attended a permitting panel hosted by Council Member Sallie Alcorn and Council Member David Robinson.

Lots of improvements are happening in the Permitting Center, but more work must be done to make sure this is a smooth process.

The Spring Branch Management District hosted a meeting with business owners and residents in Spring Branch to talk about how we can help address concerns!
