New Solid Waste Program in District A

In the District A Office, we know the heavy waste/tree waste pickup has been an issue not only in our district but throughout the City. Many times your heavy trash is picked up late or skipped or not picked up at all.

In District A, we hired a private company to help with heavy trash pickup for times that your trash is skipped and in times when there are delays. If your heavy trash is not picked up when it is supposed to be, please contact 311, and my office will check those records and deploy the company to pick it up quickly.

Keep in mind that this is a pilot program that the District A Team and I created, so please give us a little patience while we work out the intricacies of the program. If successful, we are ready to expand this program to regular trash as well.

Fiscal Year 2023 Budget Workshops

Budget Survey
Council Member Sallie Alcorn is asking for everyone to fill out a survey about the budget. City departments are currently analyzing how to spend Houston’s $5 billion operating budget. Of this $5 billion, roughly half is the tax-supported (property and sales tax) general fund. The other half represents enterprise funds – city operations supported by fees and charges (water, sewer, streets, drainage, airports). The city has a separate capital budget which will be adopted this summer.

The operating budget is the most significant legislative measure passed by council, so I believe there should be robust public engagement. By completing this survey, you are helping me understand how you want your tax dollars prioritized for spending. The survey focuses on tax-supported general fund spending.

Redistricting
The City is embarking on a process to adopt new City Council district boundaries using the information from the 2020 US Census. More information about this process can be found here. While I have not seen the proposed new maps yet, my message has been and continues to be that our community needs to stay together and not split!

Catalytic Converter Ordinance
At City Council, we recently passed an ordinance that makes it illegal to possess catalytic converters that have been cut. During the first three months of 2022, HPD recorded 3188 thefts of catalytic converters in the City of Houston, a 123% increase over the same period in previous year. Catalytic converter thefts can also be associated with violent crimes, with 34 aggravated assaults and aggravated robberies associated with catalytic converter theft in 2021 and 15 in the first three months of 2022.

HPD officers recover about 100 of these cut catalytic converters a day, but they didn’t have authority to make arrests. This ordinance will allow officers to charge people who are stealing these.
Before the vote on this ordinance, I urged the DA’s office to take the charges when HPD finds the cut catalytic converters in someone’s possession.

Homeless Camp Removal
In District A, we are continuing to clean up homeless camps. While this is being done with compassion and with resources for those individuals who need assistance, we also recognize the need to clean up the camps for everyone’s safety. Every person experiencing homelessness is offered temporary housing until permanent housing opens up.

Thank you to HPD NW Division Officers and the Houston Solid Waste Department for removing the camp at Long Point and Woodvine.
