District A Crime Updates

At a recent City Council Meeting, HPD Chief Finner provided an update about crime trends in the City of Houston. Violent crime is down across the city. Please see below for the statistics for our community. Violent crime is down 7%, and overall crime is down 6%. While that is great news, there is still more work to do. I will continue to support our officers to reduce the crime even more.

Fiscal Year 2024 Budget Hearings

Vogel Creek Construction

Construction is beginning on Vogel Creek Greenway! Construction activities will occur Monday through Saturday between 7 AM and 7 PM. Earlier starts might be required for concrete pouring in case of high temperatures. This work is expected to conclude by the end of 2023.

Residents should be mindful of the active construction sites along Vogel Creek and all intersections/connecting streets. Residents/the public should not enter areas surrounded by orange construction fencing.

In 2020, a recreational plan for the former Inwood Forest Golf Course was created. This plan, known as the Inwood Forest Recreation Plan, included proposed trails, recreation, and landscaping components. Phase One included the creation of a one-mile greenway that includes trail and gateway amenities along Vogel Creek.

Notable new features of Vogel Creek Greenway
  • A one-mile, 10-foot-wide concrete trail that begins at Victory Drive on the southern portion and ends along Streamside Drive, across from Council Grove Lane
  • New, safe pedestrian crossing at Victory Drive across from Lone Star College
  • A new gateway between Vogel Creek and Maple Tree Drive, across from Birchcroft Drive, which includes walking paths, benches, a shade trellis, an exercise station, solar safety lights, and landscaping
  • A new gateway along Streamside Drive near White Fir Drive, which includes walking paths, benches, a shade structure, an exercise station, a playground, solar safety lights, and landscaping
  • A new gateway at Streamside Drive and Council Grove, which includes landscaping and a bench
  • Safe greenway crossing underneath the existing Maple Tree Drive vehicular bridge
  • Greenway connections into the following streets: Maple Tree Drive, R V Mayfield Drive, Long Creek Lane, and Council Grove Lane
  • Directional and informational signage
  • New amenities, such as benches and trash cans
  • Maintenance of the greenway by the Houston Parks and Recreation Department

Open Finance: Checkbook

In April 2021, the City of Houston created the Open Finance initiative to provide more transparency about the City’s finances. Open Checkbook provides access to detailed expenditure-level payment data to vendors and other recipients. These efforts empower residents to get involved and understand the City’s financial activities.

The objectives of Open Finance (https://openfinance.houstontx.gov) are:

  1. Achieve a high standard of financial transparency by providing metrics, interactive visualizations, and downloadable data for Open Budget, Open Checkbook, and Open Payroll to the public.
  2. Publish information that is accurate, compliant, sustainable, consolidated.

Open Finance initiative includes three phases:

  1. Open Budget (July 2022) dataset is structured by two different aspects: revenue and expenditure data depicted as both budget and actual.
  2. Open Payroll (November 2022) will provide employee payroll data that can be filtered by payment period, department, function, and other dimensions.
  3. Open Checkbook (March 2023) will provide detailed expenditure-level payment information and expenses remitted to various vendors and payment recipients.

Construction on the Inwood Forest Stormwater Detention Basin project is anticipated to begin in May 2023. Preconstruction activities are underway and the construction contractor will begin mobilizing soon. Residents near the project area may begin to see increased construction activity, which could include trucks and heavy machinery, as well as protective fencing being installed around trees within the project area. Residents are urged to respect all warning signs as work crews move around the area.

The project will feature 12 interconnected stormwater detention basins, labeled A – L, on the former Inwood Forest Golf Course property to provide flood damage reduction benefits during heavy storms and to mitigate impacts of future planned City of Houston capital projects. The basins will vary in stormwater storage capacity, but once construction is complete, the 12 detention basins combined are estimated to hold approximately 1,200 acre-feet or a little more than 391 million gallons of stormwater storage.

The Flood Control District works to reduce flooding across the region and is committed to keeping residents informed. Please join us at the in-person meeting and visit www.hcfcd.org/InwoodForest to learn more about the project and construction activities.
