Infrastructure Check with Peck

Over the next couple of months, we will highlight some of the many key programs we are working on related to infrastructure, quality of life, and public safety. We start off this month with infrastructure:

Mayor’s Youth Council

Students in grades 9-12 are invited to apply for the 2022-2023 Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC)! The term of office is October 2022 to May 2023.

Modeled after the elected City Council, the MYC provides youth the opportunity to learn about city government, share issues of concern with city officials, and gain civic leadership skills through community service activities.

The application deadline is August 12, 2022. Applicants must be residents of Houston. To apply, go to www.bit.ly/MYC2223.

LiftOff Houston

Applications are now open for the Liftoff Houston Startup Business Plan Competition where three winners will each receive $10,000 in seed money to fund their dreams of entrepreneurship. Applications must be received by 2:00 PM on Friday, Aug. 19.

The competition, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, is sponsored by Capital One Bank and administered by the Houston Public Library (HPL) and the Office of Business Opportunity (OBO). Since its inception, Capital One has invested more than $280,000 in startup funding to winners in three categories – Innovation, Product and Service.

Community Events from July

Highlighting some of the many community events from last month!
July 4th Events in District A
I attended the funeral for Firefighter Walter Graves Jr. He was a firefighter, police officer, and formerly in the military. He was so dedicated to serving others.
The District A Team and I visited Kids’ Meals to learn about how they feed thousands of kids every day including many in District A. So thankful for their work! Truly amazing what they are able to accomplish every day.
I spoke at a Houston-Galveston Area Council meeting to advocate for more flooding mitigation funding for the City of Houston. We have significant flooding issues that need to be addressed, and it’s unacceptable that COH stands to not get our fair share of federal funding.
Ice Pops with the Cops at SpringSpirit!
