Houstonians deserve to know exactly how their money is spent. The new $5 Solid Waste Administrative Fee is subject to sales taxes, meaning that a portion of what you pay is going to the state rather than directly where we need it most. We have a responsibility to be transparent. That is why I authored an amendment to the budget that required this fee to be a separate line item in your water bill and not included with everything else. You should know where your money is going. While $.38 out of $5 may not seem like a lot of money, it adds up quickly when we are talking about roughly 400,000 households. I am not convinced that this fee should be subject to a sales tax considering it is not a traditional garbage fee, and I will continue asking questions. I appreciate Mayor Whitmire including the tax with the $5 and not adding the sales tax on top of the five dollars. It was the right decision. He told the public that we would pay $5 a month, and he did not deviate from his word. A $.41 sales tax (on top of $5) probably would not have made a huge difference for the average Houstonian, but he chose to stick with $5 total. So while I am frustrated that we didn’t know about the sales tax upfront, I do appreciate the mayor sticking to his word. I’m going to continue asking questions and pushing for accountability so Houston taxpayers get the most value possible for every dollar they pay. |

On the 25th anniversary of September 11th, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost and the countless families, first responders, and communities forever changed by that day.
I had the honor of visiting a Houston Fire Department station as they prepared for their 9/11 remembrance ceremony. Our first responders make a commitment every day to serve and protect others. 25 years after 9/11, that commitment continues in the work they do every day.We will never forget. |
