After Hurricane Beryl, firefighters from the Houston Fire Department Wildland Group were out in District A and the rest of the city cutting down trees blocking access for emergency vehicles. This also helped CenterPoint to gain access to hard hit areas that weren’t accessible due to the trees. Thank you to all our first responders!

Thank you also to volunteers from CrowdSource Rescue who also assisted with tree removal after the storm!

Hurricane Beryl: Preparing by the City
Council Session began on July 24th with a report from the former acting director of Public Safety and Homeland Security about how the city prepared for Hurricane Beryl. I asked how CenterPoint’s lack of accurate power outage maps impacted the City of Houston Office of Emergency Management’s (OEM) work in the aftermath.

OEM had to do extra, time consuming work to determine where to deploy resources because CenterPoint’s outage tracker was not working. OEM had to create new mapping systems to determine how to respond to this storm because of it. The outage tracker must be fixed immediately. When it is broken, it’s frustrating for everyone, but it also causes real consequences for deploying needed resources.

The broken outage tracker also had implications for our senior living facilities. OEM/HFD spent extra time checking on facilities because we didn’t know if they had power. My staff and I also spent countless hours checking on them as well.

Memorial Park Conservancy: Park Conversations

The Memorial Park Conservancy would like to invite the public to a very special event happening at Memorial Park on August 23, 2024 to unveil their annual Park Conversations Audio Experience, “Remembering and Honoring the Soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment.” The installation will remain active through September 30, 2024.

Admission is FREE and open to the public.

Audio stories will be available to experience at Memorial Park through September 30. This exhibit pays tribute to the U.S. Army’s 3rd Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment. These African American soldiers, who were assigned to guard the construction of Camp Logan, were unjustly convicted and court-martialed following the tragic events of August 23, 1917. Nineteen soldiers were executed. Their convictions were set aside by the U.S. Army on November 13, 2023, opening a new chapter of history for the United States, Houston and Memorial Park.

I had the opportunity to thank the officers who came from across the state to work with the Houston Police Department after the hurricane. Thank you to all the officers who supported our city and to Mayor John Whitmire, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and Chief Nim Kidd with the Texas Department of Emergency Management for organizing this!
Thank you to our amazing volunteers who fed hundreds of people at our food distribution! Special thanks to Houston Food Bank, Memorial Assistance Ministries, and H-E-B!
