Inwood Forest Stormwater Detention Groundbreaking

With Ron Delaney (President of Antoine Forest Estates HOA, Julie Marinucci (President of the Inwood Forest Community Improvement Association), Philip Salerno (President of the Inwood Forest Super Neighborhood), and Brenda Stardig (Former District A Council Member)

Last week, we broke ground on the Inwood Forest Stormwater Detention Project in District A. This $80M will help to mitigate flooding for over 4,400 homes and businesses. Construction on the 12 interconnected basins will begin later this spring. With over 1,000 acre feet of detention, it is enough water to fill the Astrodome!

In conjunction with this project, the Houston Parks Board is working on a recreational component which includes parklets and a 1-mile hike-and-bike trail between Victory Drive and Council Grove Lane.

Special thanks to all of the community partners who helped moved this project forward, former District A Council Member Brenda Stardig for getting the City to purchase this property and beginning this project, Mayor Turner, Steve Costello, FEMA, and Harris County Flood Control District.

District A’s Ditch Maintenance Program

Flood mitigation continues to be a top priority in District A. I am constantly working on ways to prepare for and prevent flooding in District A. While upgraded infrastructure is needed in many circumstances, maintenance of open ditches can sometimes mean the difference between flooding and not.

Under the new Ditch Maintenance Program that I implemented recently, City-owned ditches are now being maintained more regularly in our community. Now I am ready to expand this assistance to roadside (open) ditches in front of your homes!

Program Details:
This program is to assist with cleaning, mowing, regrading, and desilting roadside (open) ditches in front of your homes or businesses for those in need. This will be a one-time cleanup as this new program is implemented with the possibility for more in the future.

Per the City Code of Ordinances [Article XI, Section 10-451 B (10)], it is the abutting property owner’s responsibility to maintain ditches free of debris so water can flow with minimal obstructions (clear of weeds, brush, rubbish, or any debris that may prevent the flow of water). This means that it is your responsibility to maintain the ditch in front of your home. While it might be your responsibility, it is not always feasible to do so. This is where the new Ditch Maintenance Program comes in to help in these circumstances!

Criteria to Apply:
This is a new pilot program I implemented and has limited funding. This program is for District A residents/businesses only. If you are not sure which council district you are in, please check here. We will maintain ditches on a first-come, first served basis until funding runs out. As of this time, we are only accepting applications if you meet one or more of the following:

  • Senior citizen
  • Limited mobility
  • Unique circumstance where maintaining a ditch is not available/feasible

How to Apply:
Fill out the survey here. If you have any questions/concerns with the form, please contact my office.

If you have a flooding concern that is not related to an open ditch, please do the following:
1. Contact 3-1-1 and get a Service Request (SR) Number. Ways to contact 3-1-1:

2. Send the SR Number and photos (if available) to my office:

Aron Ledet Park Construction

As part of the 50/50 Park Partners Initiative, Aron Ledet Park will receive substantial improvements! Construction begins in the next several weeks, and it is expected to conclude before the end of the year.

These improvements include replacing the playground, adding solar lighting to the park, improving the walking trail and concrete work, improving the spray ground, updating the basketball court, adding a picnic shelter, and repainting the existing pavilion.

Thank you to the Houston Parks Board for working with the community on the plan and design.

Langwood Panel Replacement Project

The Langwood neighborhood will undergo a concrete panel replacement project. The project is starting now and will take roughly 90 days to complete.
