Mother’s Day, like basically every holiday involving family, comes with a plethora of expectations and emotions.
Even the holiday’s creator had mixed feelings about the day.
Anna Jarvis celebrated the first Mother’s Day in the early 1900s following the death of her mother, expecting it to be a quiet, personal way to commemorate the sacrifices mothers make for their children.
Then Anna spent the rest of her life waging legal battles over how the holiday she started, fighting its commercialization.
So here we are in 2022 with Mother’s Day upon us and wanting to honor the mothers or mother figures in our lives. What to do?
Anna Jarvis would likely wrinkle her nose at even a store-bought card and bouquet of flowers.
But if you’re looking to go above and beyond for mom this Mother’s Day, the Spring Branch District has plenty of options for spoiling her.
Gogh with it, artfully
Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience is still at The Marq’E Entertainment Center. Limited tickets were available as of this writing for the visual/video/audio salute to painter Vincent Van Gogh.
Tickets are also available for a competing Van Gogh experience, Immersive Van Gogh, at 1314 Brittmoore.
At the same venue, tickets were available as of this writing for Frida: Immersive Dream, a similar experience featuring the art of the beloved 20th Century Mexican artist best known for compelling self-portraits and radiant paintings inspired by her life in her native country.

Hammer & Stain Houston is offering several customizable projects to be completed at the Spring Branch District’s female-owned 4J Brewing, 1348 Cedar Post Lane, Saturday between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Whether your mom’s mantra is “Thankful and Blessed” “Let’s Fiesta” or something in between, Hammer & Stain has a project for her.

Nice Winery
A “nice” time for wine
Houston’s first commercial production estate wine vineyard inside the city limits is located in the Spring Branch District at 10520 Westview.
Nice, right?
Yes, it’s called Nice Winery, and if you buy your mom a wine club membership starting at just $39 a month, you can take her to pick up her May allotment this Saturday between noon and 6 p.m.

Speaking of chefs, Chef Jaime at Warehouse 72 in the Marq’E Centre is offering a four-course dinner menu for just $49 all month long. Located at 7620 Katy Fwy, Suite 305, Warehouse 72 also offers a beautiful Sunday brunch.

Feges BBQ
BBQ and bellinis for the best
The Feges BBQ Spring Branch folks say they love moms so much they decided to break their cooking-eggs-to-order rule and will serving brisket chilaquiles for Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday from 11am-3pm. Also, frozen bellinis.
For an authentic Koreatown BBQ experience, stop by any of the District’s amazing Korean restaurants. Korea Garden, 9501 Long Point Rd., is open Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Seoul Garden, 9446 Long Point Rd., is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Upscale Korean BBQ spot BORI is open from noon to 10 p.m. on Mother’s Day. You may want to make a reservation, though.
Mom says eat your vegetables
If you or your mom are vegan, the Spring Branch District’s Cascabel, 1415 Murray Bay St., is the perfect place for a vegan Mexican Sunday brunch. It also happens to be Cinco de Mayo this week, and Cascabel will offer taco and drinks specials Thursday. So, maybe mom would like to celebrate her special day a little early with margaritas?
Take her for a spin around Spring Branch
Nonprofit organization We Are One Fitness (WAOF) is hosting a Tour de Branch this Saturday. The social bike ride begins at Cobble & Spoke at 11 a.m. with stops at Kirby Ice House Memorial and the Spring Branch District’s 4J Brewery.
