Owners Darrell & Michelle Morris; sons Justus & Hendrix

Darrell and Michelle Morris had been residents of Spring Branch for a decade when they decided to move their business, Well Done Cooking Classes, to their neighborhood.

They had first-hand knowledge of the positive changes happening around them.

“We saw the potential, the growth that was occurring, and we loved the people in the area,” Darrell Morris said.

Well Done Cooking Classes opened at Spring Branch Village, a Braun Enterprises shopping development, in April. Neighboring businesses include Feges BBQ, Barnaby’s Cafe, Cosmic Ice Cream, Slowpokes, Blind Goat and more.

The Morrises ran the cooking school at a storefront in Independence Heights for five years befor moving.

The new location, Morris said, offered convenience and proximity to downtown Houston and the Energy Corridor.

“We knew we could offer our experiences to a greater number of people,” he said of the move.

Well Done provides a shared experience through food and cooking.

“We are hands-on and our instructors know that they are not the main stars of the show. Our ‘junior chefs’ (customers) are the stars, and we are there to simply facilitate,” he said.

Customers can choose from three experiences.

Couples, friends or work colleagues can take part in Date Night, offered Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and the first Wednesday of the month.

Family Brunch on Sundays is, as the name suggests, intended for families with adults and kids participating.

Technique and Fundamentals classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, as well as Saturday afternoons, typically attract people in the food and beverage industry, those seeking to launch a career in food service or home chefs looking to take their skills to the next level, Morris said.

Small businesses and corporate clients can book private events any day of the week depending on availability.

“We’ve also had birthday parties, bachelorette parties, family get-togethers and other events in which the host would like full use of the facility for their guests,” Morris said.

While a majority of the business is done on-site at the Spring Branch location, the company has a private service in which chefs can travel and present the experiences at clients’ homes.

Well Done’s parent company, Southern Cadence Cuisine, is a boutique catering company.

Popular classes at the cooking school include French Macarons, Dinner on Bourbon, Dinner on the Bayou, Dinner in Tuscany, “This is How We Roll – Sushi” and steaks.

Each class lasts 2.5 to 4 hours depending on the food being prepared.

Costs range from $79 per person for technique and family classes to $168 per couple for date nights.

Come hungry! You can eat what you prepare. Well Done also offers a beer and wine selection or you can BYOB. Also offered for some classes are wine and/or beer tastings with each course for an additional fee.

“We are in the process of launching our baking and pastry certificate program and, towards the middle of next year, we’ll have started the process to launch our wine fundamentals program,” he added.

While those classes may sound advanced, Morris said anyone keen to learn more about the art of preparing food and serving wine is welcome.

“We take a non-intimidating approach to cooking to ensure everyone is comfortable, having fun, and can learn a cooking skill that will last for a lifetime,” he said.
