In economic terms, the rewards of supporting small businesses in our community are clear.
When we buy from independent, locally owned businesses, a significantly greater portion of our money cycles back through our local economy.
The American Independent Business Alliance found that local retailers recirculate 48% of their revenue back into the local economy, compared to only 14% for chain retailers — a roughly 3-to-1 difference.
Keeping money in the community means more local jobs, environmental benefits and tax dollars to support local infrastructure.
Win, win and win.
But what if there were yet another reward, specifically for the consumer?
People who shop, eat and play in the Spring Branch District can now get 5% back on what they buy at hundreds of businesses, thanks to a free app.

The app is called Open Rewards and can be downloaded to your cell phone.
Here’s an example of how it works:
- Go to a participating Spring Branch District restaurant and spend $50 for a meal.
- Pay the bill in the usual way.
- Upload your receipt to Open Rewards (or link your credit card to the app to bypass this step).
- You’ll receive 5% cash back in your account.
- Go to another participating business in the program, make a purchase and apply your credit toward it.

Why Use Open Rewards?
Open Rewards incentivizes local shopping by giving customers cash back every time they shop at eligible stores. They can then use these rewards at any other local business in the program. That means every dollar invested in Open Rewards stays local — hyper-local.
And the program is completely free for businesses, delivering immediate returns.
No action is required of businesses to give or redeem rewards, making the process hassle-free. Businesses also receive the full dollar amount for all transactions, ensuring no revenue is lost.
Take a look at just a few of the Spring Branch businesses already on the app:
Dutch Bros Coffee, Dollar Tree, Subway, Cambrian Coffee, El Ahorro Supermarket, Roostar, Aldi, 85C Bakery Cafe, Mambo Seafood, Paris Baguette, Underbelly Burger, Spark Laundry, Stuffed Belly, The Blind Goat, The Decoy, Dairy Queen, Nice Winery, Tortas Perronas, Spring Branch Ace Hardware — and more!
