For nearly 70 years, The Women’s Home has been dedicated to helping women and their families build fulfilling lives in the Houston area.
Unlike a shelter or detox program, The Women’s Home provides safe living spaces and comprehensive treatment through a unique model of care called WholeLife. This holistic approach focuses on the entire person, preparing women and their families to become empowered, productive members of their communities.
A significant portion of the organization’s programming is based in the Spring Branch Management District. Currently, they offer four distinct programs: a residential treatment and transitional housing program, two permanent supportive housing programs, and a collaborative service center aimed at preventing and ending homelessness in the community.
Chief Operations Officer April McIntosh emphasizes that The Women’s Home has a notable presence in the Spring Branch District, with three separate addresses, two of which are permanent supportive housing units for clients.
Why Spring Branch?
”The area is growing, very diverse, and the people have a great commitment to help others in need,” said Case Manager Janette Guerra.
The Jane Cizik Garden Place is located at 1839 Jacquelyn Dr., while the Adele and Ber Pieper Family Place can be found at 7625 Hammerly Blvd.
The Mabee WholeLife Service Center, located at 1905 Jacquelyn Dr., is a community space for Spring Branch residents, providing highly individualized services.
Located next door to Garden Place, this 30,000-square-foot service center collaborates with community partners to offer a range of services aimed at enhancing the wellness and stability of families in The Women’s Home housing programs and the surrounding neighborhood.
Ber Pieper Family Place is a two- and three-bedroom apartment complex for low-income families and includes a community room for events, activities, and workshops organized in partnership with other agencies.
While the Mabee Center opened in 2017, The Women’s Home has a rich history dating back to 1957, when The Women’s Christian Mission opened its doors to women in need. On June 4, 2015, The Women’s Home began constructing affordable housing for families, backed by a $3.5 million investment from the City of Houston.
Together with 20 collaborative partners, The Women’s Home now provides integrated care to thousands of low-income individuals in Spring Branch, offering a range of services, including:
- Primary Health Care
- Mental Health Counseling
- Peer Support and Recovery Services
- Prevention and Intervention Services
- Youth Development Programming
- Financial Literacy and Adult Education
- Case Management and Referral Services
- Basic Needs and Other Crisis Assistance
The organization’s mission states, “At The Women’s Home, we envision a world in which every woman recognizes her unique value and potential for a life filled with love, dignity, and purpose.”
