Discover how one speakeasy aims to create a place for those seeking an out-of-the-box cocktail bar experience
As you walk along Bingle Rd in Spring Branch, you’ll notice a cheerful storefront drawing a lot of attention. A bright blue and white awning tops what appears to be a quaint candy shop, but behind these doors, there’s more than meets the eye.
It’s called Aye Candy, and you’ll find more than just sugary sweets at this location. As you enter this one-of-a-kind establishment, you’re greeted with one of the coolest cocktail bars on the west side of Houston. Founder Cristy Velasco has created a true gem, adding to the vibrant feel of this beloved neighborhood. But behind its ultra-cool walls is a story as unique as its decor and cocktails.
From Candy Store to Cocktail Bar
It all started as the world emerged from the haze of the pandemic. With a vacant building on their lot, Cristy Velasco, whose family had spent over 25 years operating an insurance business in Spring Branch, was looking to branch out (no pun intended) and start a new venture. Cristy considered what business model might be a good addition to the neighborhood. At first, her vision was to open a candy shop geared toward providing sweet treats to children. But, since the doors wouldn’t open until five, she thought that might not be the best business model for success. Undeterred, this innovative entrepreneur began to rethink her vision.
Recognizing that the neighborhood had attracted buzzy restaurants over the past few years, Cristy partnered with her mother, Mely Velasco, and brother, Rafael Velasco, to open a bar that no one would expect. One that went beyond a typical sports bar, offering a sophisticated and mature setting that would fit in perfectly in any metropolitan city. While Spring Branch is no stranger to bar scenes, the area lacked a place where adults could gather after work to relax and unwind in a more elevated setting.
A cocktail bar fit the bill, and Velasco had the perfect name: I candy. But the name was never meant to be. In a hilarious twist, Velasco’s mom accidentally registered the name as Aye Candy, creating the memorable twist that gives this bar it’s signature charm. All things work out when it’s meant to be!
Taking the Town by Storm
Since its opening, Aye Candy has captured the hearts and minds of Spring Branch residents. Whether it’s in line at Costco or in one of many news reports, people can’t stop talking about the neighborhood’s newest addition. What makes this speakeasy stand out?
To start, the atmosphere is unlike any other. While from the outside it looks like a quaint shop, the inside has an eclectic mix of modern-day charm with touches from a bygone era. There’s a definite moody vibe with lush couches, brick walls, and unique lighting. It’s everything you want from a sophisticated bar, without the stuffy feeling!
The staff is incredible, starting with the hostess whose lively and friendly demeanor is impossible to ignore. Aye Candy made sure to get top-notch bartenders and you can expect to have one of the most delicious drinks in Spring Branch when you visit. If you look closely, you’ll probably see Velasco walking the room, talking to patrons, and ensuring everyone is having an excellent time.
What’s a cocktail bar without exceptional cocktails? This is where Aye Candy truly shines. They elevate the classic Old Fashioned by using vanilla turbinado-flavored bourbon and serving it over a scotch cube in a rocks glass. Their cocktails are thoughtfully garnished with flowers, fruits, and herbs to enhance each flavor profile. In addition to their impressive cocktail creations, Aye Candy offers a fine selection of wines and delectable charcuterie boards for those looking for a satisfying snack.
Why Aye Candy is an Excellent Addition to Spring Branch
Spring Branch is already a vibrant neighborhood, known for exceptional dining, which is why Aye Candy fits in perfectly. What makes it stand out is its focus on catering to a more mature clientele. In an interview discussing the grand opening of her bar, Velasco pointed out the inspiration behind this decision.
“I have a daughter who’s 22, and we went to a [bar], me and my husband, and she was there. And I was like if I’m at a bar where my daughter’s at, that’s not good. I want an older crowd, I don’t want to deal with the bottle service, I don’t want to deal with the loudness and the obnoxiousness, so that’s why we came up with the 25 and up [age restriction].”
And you can definitely tell that vibe from the moment you walk in. While the atmosphere is laid back, everyone is there to enjoy themselves, have a couple of drinks with friends, and relax without worrying that it will get rowdy or out of hand. It’s safe to say Velasco’s vision of a modern-day speakeasy is a wonderous success, and as it attracts visitors from all around Houston, the positive impact on the local economy will continue to grow. What an exciting example of a Spring Branch resident bringing their vision to life by creating a unique cocktail bar unlike any other.
