Cinttya Morgan, a chemist, knew that she wanted to be a scientist early on. A chemistry set she received from her mom at age 9 pretty much ensured this would happen.

After spending several years in the military and aerospace polymers world, Morgan and her husband, Trevor, founded Little Beakers in Houston in 2011 as a multi-location business to engage kids interested in science.

Their latest Houston-area “lab” opened this summer at the Marq’E Entertainment Center in the Spring Branch District. Their other local outlets are in Cypress and The Woodlands.

With the tagline, “Created by a scientist for future scientists,” Morgan said she decided to open a Spring Branch District location because the area is “amazing, vibrant and diverse.”

“As a minority woman, my dream for Little Beakers is to ignite the passion for future scientists, and of course would love to see more girls and minorities get into STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers, which is why I decided to start this type of educational facility for kids in the first place,” Morgan said.

The 6,000-square-foot Marq’E Houston Little Beakers boasts three classrooms and a dedicated research lab.

Parents can join the kids in choosing from up to 30 experiments from an Open Lab procedures book for an hour or more of scientific fun. Or, if you need a break from the kids, sign up for a scheduled one-hour group lab session where a Little Beakers lab assistant guides the kids. In Little Beakers dissection sessions, participants use age-appropriate tools to examine real specimens ranging from earthworms and grasshoppers to snakes, frogs and sharks.

Prices start at $15 for an hour of “lab time” for a child between the age of 2 and 16.

Little Beakers also offers camps, hands-on science classes for preschool, home-school and after-school science fans and even “Big Beakers” experiences at which adults can unleash their inner scientists.

Annual memberships and birthday party packages are also available.

Morgan said business has been challenging these last couple of years, as it has for many small businesses, but they are cautiously getting back to a “new normal” and strive to be vigilant to ensure the safety of their staff and clients.

Little Beakers is open every day except for major holidays, so — if you want to unleash your inner scientist — head over to Little Beakers. You might even want to bring along the kids.
